Professor William J. Beal designed the botanical garden in 1873. The garden was originally designed around a small tributary which flowed into the Red Cedar River. Professor Beal was a dedicated teacher and researcher. When he Passed in 1924 the Garden was dedicated in honor and was given the current title W.J. Beal Botanical Gardens.
